Green tea powder is a popular ingredient used to flavor everything from chia seed pudding and matcha overnight oats to baked goods and ice cream.
But perhaps one of the best ways to enjoy it, especially if you're new to this ingredient, is in an iced cold Strawberry Matcha Latte. It's a variation on my dairy-free oat milk matcha latte recipe and features a burst of added flavor from ripe berries.
You may have seen beverages like this at popular coffee houses and tea shops like Boba Guys. But they are incredibly easy to make at home without refined sugars and only a handful of ingredients.

Equipment
While it's traditional to use a bamboo matcha whisk to blend the powder with the hot water, if you don't have one, a small stainless steel whisk or even a fork will work.
In addition, if you don't have a blender to make the strawberry puree, a food processor can be used instead. Or simply mash the strawberries and maple syrup by hand with a potato masher, fork, or muddler.
Instructions
- Prepare the matcha by whisking the powder with hot water (approximately 175°F/80°C) in a small bowl or cup. Make sure no clumps remain.
- Puree the strawberries and pure maple syrup in a blender.
- Add the strawberry mixture to the bottom of a tall glass and top with ice.
- Pour the plant milk over the ice.
- Give the prepared matcha tea a quick stir, then pour it over the milk. Grab a straw and enjoy!
Serving suggestions
You can enjoy a strawberry iced matcha latte any time of day. However, since it does contain caffeine, you may want to sip one in the morning with breakfast or early afternoon as a pick-me-up.
This refreshing drink pairs well with savory dishes like scrambled silken tofu and avocado and tomato toast. Or try it with sweets like pumpkin chocolate chip oatmeal balls and raw vegan key lime pie.
Storing
While matcha lattes are best enjoyed right away, you can prepare the strawberry puree in advance and store it covered and refrigerated for up to 5 days.
Or if you have strawberries you don't want to go to waste, you can make a batch of puree and freeze it for up to 5 months. Defrost it in the refrigerator overnight before using it in a latte.
Recipe FAQs
Matcha powder is a type of green tea. Young tea leaves are ground into a powder, which can then be whisked with hot water to form a tea. This is different from regular green tea which is made by drying the tea leaves which are then steeped in hot water and removed. With matcha powder you are consuming the whole leaves rather than steeping them in water and then discarding them.
Ceremonial matcha is made with younger tea leaves than culinary matcha. While both can be used for beverages, ceremonial matcha has a more vibrant color and tends to be less bitter than culinary matcha.
According to Healthline's 7 Proven Ways Matcha Tea Improves Your Health, matcha green tea is high in antioxidants, may help protect the liver, boosts brain function, may help prevent cancer, may promote heart health, helps you lose weight, and more. In addition, matcha's high concentrations of flavonoids and L-theanine produce relaxing effects by raising serotonin and dopamine levels.
