Vegan mashed sweet potatoes with coconut milk are creamy, lightly spiced with cinnamon, and made without butter or added sugar. Baking the sweet potatoes before mashing brings out their natural sweetness, so you only need a few simple ingredients.
These dairy-free mashed sweet potatoes are perfect for Thanksgiving and other holiday meals, but they're easy enough to enjoy anytime. You can even bake the sweet potatoes ahead of time to make dinner prep easier.

This was an absolute dream! Super easy to make and unbelievably delicious. We will be making this again for sure! It was an excellent addition to our vegan Thanksgiving feast. Thank you!
- Saidi
Ingredients

- Sweet potatoes: I typically use orange-fleshed sweet potatoes, but purple sweet potatoes or Japanese white-fleshed sweet potatoes work, too. Depending on the variety, you may need to adjust the amount of coconut milk.
- Canned coconut milk: Choose unsweetened, full-fat coconut milk from a can, not the coconut milk beverage sold in cartons. Stir well if the cream has separated from the liquid.
Please see the recipe card for the complete ingredients, measurements, and instructions.
How to make vegan mashed sweet potatoes

- Bake the sweet potatoes in the oven until fork tender.
- Let them cool until they're easy to handle, then remove and discard the skins.
- Place the sweet potatoes in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Mash while gradually adding coconut milk until creamy.
- Season with cinnamon, salt, and pepper, to taste. Garnish with fresh chives, if desired, and serve warm.
Serving suggestions

These mashed sweet potatoes make a delicious side dish for holiday meals or everyday dinners. I especially like serving them with lentil meatloaf muffins and a little cranberry sauce.
Round out your holiday menu with balsamic roasted Brussels sprouts and carrots for a colorful vegetable side.
For Thanksgiving, they're also wonderful alongside sauteed fresh green beans and mushrooms. Add a sprinkle of cinnamon or chopped fresh herbs like chives or parsley before serving.
For another dairy-free side dish, try my Mediterranean olive oil mashed potatoes next.

I made the recipe and after mashing with the potatoes masher, I used my electric mixer and they came out even creamier. Thank you for the recipe. I love it.😊
Amy says
That's fantastic! I need to get a new electric mixer so I can do that, too!

Yum! And so much healthier than other sweet potato recipes. Having these as a choice at a potluck will help me avoid the unhealthy sweet potato dishes!

Yes! So much healthier than the marshmallow version. 😉
